Adware is the software that is downloaded that causes advertisements to show up on your computer. It is generally downloaded without your knowledge as it is attached to other software you are downloading known as freeware. Although this will have, in most cases, been disclosed in the terms and conditions of the download, people are not usually aware they are downloading adware as well.
Adware works by running advertisements when you are using the software, but in some cases it can run advertisements when you are not using the programme as well. These can be as harmless as a banner on your screen, or as invasive and annoying as a pop-up window.
Monitoring Your Habits.
As well as this, some adware has the ability to monitor the websites you visit and your habits on your computer. The logic behind this is that it will be able to create a profile on you, what you are interested and then tailor the advertisements it shows you to suit you better. Although this makes sense from an advertising and marketing perspective, this can be very dangerous for you.
Effectively this type of operation is the work of spyware. The information adware collects when it is monitoring your computer like this may not be limited to just the statistics of your consumer preferences. This means it can observe, extract, and use more personal information about you.
As well as this, the information it collects can sometimes be sold to third parties to use or exploit. Although the information the adware is searching for should be explained in the agreement you consent to when downloading the free software, it is not always there. Also in most cases people do not read the fine print when it comes to terms and conditions for software so will not be aware of this.
A Foolish Game.
Not all adware operates like spyware, but that does not necessarily mean it is not harmful to your computer. As well as being dangerous to your security, adware can also be damaging to your computer. It can affect the speed of your computer or make its systems unstable.
It is important when downloading freeware to read the terms and conditions so you are fully aware of what you are downloading and exposing your computer to. There are also generally non-adware models available for you to purchase if you do not want to take the risk.
