Adware is the software that is inadvertently downloaded along with free software. It is attached to this ‘freeware’ as a way for the developers to sustain their product and generate revenue.
It operates in several different ways. The most common is it causes advertisements to pop up on your screen when you are using the software – or in some cases even when you are not using it. This is often extremely annoying as the pop-ups open a new window and disrupt you from what you are doing.
Computer Issues.
As well as being annoying and intrusive, adware can cause your computer systems to slow down or become unstable. Because it takes a lot for your computer to run the adware programmes it will slow down the general running of your computer or cause things to lag.
Adware can also create great security risks for you if it operates as spyware. This is when the software monitors the websites you are visiting and keeping track of personal information so it can create a profile of your interests and tailor advertisements to these.
How to Get Rid Of It.
Because of these many annoying and dangerous features of adware, lots of people chose to get rid of it. There are several methods available to rid your computer of adware.
One option is to remove adware once you become aware it is on your computer. You can do this by manually removing the adware using the uninstall functions on your computer. However this is only possible for adware that is not very intrusive and unfortunately most adware does not operate this way. In most cases adware will not show up in your computer or won’t appear on your programme list so you will be unable to remove it manually.
If manual removal is not an option, there are adware removal programmes you can download. These should be separate to your anti-virus programme, as this is only really designed to target viruses. These adware and spyware removers are available to download or purchase online.
As well as removing adware, you can take steps to prevent it getting onto your computer in the first place. The most obvious step is to make sure you read the fine print when downloading free software so you know what you are downloading. Other options include adjusting your internet browser settings to “medium security”, installing a firewall to filter adware out, and keeping all of your programmes updated.
